Ways to visit St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco)

Popular and perpetually busy, St. Mark’s Basilica is the most famous monument in Venice. You can reserve skip-the-line tickets in advance, or book an after-hours tour for private evening access. While the exterior is visited on just about every city sightseeing tour, a guided tour is the best way to experience the interior, given the complexity of its art and architecture.

The basilica anchors St. Mark’s Square, so you can easily combine a tour of the church with a gondola ride and a Doge’s Palace tour.

Not to be missed!
There is something magical about visiting an edifice like this, and especially at night. Give me this over Versailles any day of the week. The guide was knowledgeable, personable and enthusiastic. Her commentary was informative and passionate.

Venice Skip the line St Mark's Basilica tour
Tour guide, Veronica, was excellent. The Basilica was beautiful. However, the admin was terrible. There were at least a half dozen other tour operators meeting at the same place and all coordinated by a single person/entity. We only found out by accident that we had to sign in at a kiosk and get tickets to the Basilica. Then we had to go to the "coordinator" and find out our guides number. Not at all like other Viator tours. I rate it high only because the tour guide and the tour were.very good.

Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tour
Our tour guide was great. Basilica tour was wonderful. Doge’s Palace was just OK. Palace missing many historical art works etc. Brief prison/ Bridge of Sighs tour was a plus. I would just go with a Basilica tour.

Really enjoyed this tour! Pamela, our guide, was informative and helpful. The meeting address is not accurate so follow description of where to meet, which is accurate. Viator should correct this issue.

Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola ride
It was a great tour other than the gondola ride. We were made to share the ride with another couple and we were left to sit on the uncomfortable chairs on the sides of the gondola while the other couple got to sit on the forward facing couch seat.

St. Mark’s Basilica Guided Tour with Optional Terrace Access
It was about one hour tour, take the morning one in order to allow day light makes mosaic tiles shine and be more visible. Claire was knowledgeable and meanwhile full of joy. The only problem: tour operator showed up late, and I had to go all around square and ask all other tour guys about it. Besides, for visiting basilica you have to pay €5 , and access to terrace €7 on top of tour price. Great tour if you have a limited time in Venice

Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola ride
Overall an informative tour. We had several others on the tour who monopolized the attention of our guide, which quickly became annoying. If you want a private tour, spend the money and book a private tour. If you’re going on a group tour, be considerate of others.

When to visit St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco)

The basilica is most crowded at midday, so aim for a morning or late-afternoon visit. Summer is the busiest time, while Venice is relatively quiet from November through February (aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays, and during Carnival).

The Pala d’Oro

St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is famous for Michelangelo's Pietà and Florence’s Duomo is known for Brunelleschi’s dome, but St. Mark’s Basilica’s greatest treasure—the stunning Pala d'Oro—is older than even those masterpieces. This glittering gold and enamel altarpiece from 976 AD is considered one of the most important, refined examples of Byzantine enamel in the world.
