Ways to visit Acropolis

The Acropolis complex is one of the most visited attractions in Greece, included on most Athens city sightseeing tours and often combined with a visit to the New Acropolis Museum or other Ancient Greece sites, such as Epidaurus, Cape Sounion, and the Temple of Poseidon. The best way to explore the ruins is on a guided city walking tour, taking in highlights such as the iconic Parthenon, Propylaea (Propylaia), the Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion.

Half Day Athens Private Tailor-Made City Tour (Skip the line of Acropolis)
Gear tour. Sidori our driver picked us up in a fabulous van and off we went to meet our guide Effy a little closer to the Acropolis. To start Sidori was funny, shared his knowledge of the area, took interest in each of us and weaved through the traffic effortlessly. We soon picked up Effy who insured we got a deep understanding of the Acropolis complex and our safety climbing this imposing structure. Great job Fabulous job by both Thank you

Acropolis monuments & Parthenon Walking Tour with Optional Acropolis Museum
Our visit to the Acropolis was an incredible experience, thanks to Oreste, our guide. His knowledge, humour and genuine love of the site made it all more meaningful for our group. He kept the pace of the climb within our ability, always reminding us about safety while we viewed this absolutely breathtaking place. We highly recommend Athens Walks for any of your tours in Athens. They are centrally located and wonderful to work with.

Skip the Line Acropolis of Athens Tour
Second time to the Acropolis, first was right after reopening from the COVID fiasco, when no guided tours were allowed. Needless to say, this tour really opened our eyes to the historical, cultural, political and architectural background that enriched our visit immensely from the first time when we just walked around and read the posted placards. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining and made the visit that much more memorable. Worth doing so you can fully appreciate the Parthenon.

Demitrious (spelling?) was amazing. Very knowledgeable and pleasant. He kept the group entertained and moving along. Somehow he got us to the top of the Acropolis without any of us falling back. Great job!

Without our personable and knowledgeable guide, viewing the Acropolis and going to the museum would not have been very worthwhile. She gave us a lot of interesting information and chose some of the exhibits at the museum so we weren’t overwhelmed.

Acropolis Walking Tour, Including Syntagma Square & City Center
Our guide Helena was informative and a wealth of information. A great intro to the city and some of the major sites, of course including the Acropolis. We liked that it ended on top of the Acropolis allowing us to explore more as needed. We also really appreciated the headphone sets as it allowed us to hear all the information from our guide.

Skip-the-Line Multipass to Acropolis and 6 Attraction with audio
Helpful to have these tickets ahead of attending the sites. Make sure you download your QR code to your phone as you may find yourself with Wifi. The audio was not really reliable but we did get it to work at the Acropolis. You can purchase tickets ahead for a bit less money, but if the audio worked consistently, it would have been worth it.

  • Choose between a standard entrance ticket and a multi-attraction ticket that includes access to other sites.

  • Admission lines can take up to two hours in peak summer, so it's best to book ahead.

  • The Acropolis provides little shade—bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water if visiting in the summer months.

  • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking over uneven ground.

  • Most areas of the archaeological site are wheelchair accessible; an elevator is located on the northwest side.

When to visit Acropolis

The Athens Acropolis is open year-round, but it can get extremely busy and hot in the summer months. To avoid the crowds, arrive right before opening or just before close, when most of the day-trippers and cruise passengers are yet to arrive or have already left. Travelers on a budget might prefer to visit in winter—ticket prices can be reduced by up to 50 percent between November and March.

Where to Enjoy the Best Views of the Acropolis

Find a prime view of the Parthenon at the top of Mars Hill; capture the archaeological site in its entirety from Filopappos Hill, located just southwest of the Acropolis; or gaze out over the Acropolis and the surrounding city from Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in Athens. The clifftop ruins are at their most atmospheric at night—choose a rooftop bar or restaurant in central Athens for a great view of the illuminated Acropolis.
